Most databases encourage you to create a personal account where you may subscribe to alerts to table of contents (new issues of a journal), citations (new items citing a specific article – only available in a few databases, like ISI and on some publishers’ website) and saved searches (new articles matching your saved search on for example a topic or an author)
Some publishers allow you to subscribe to the same without creating an account, f ex via a simple registration of your email on their website.
